These pork chops are a winner at our house. No one gets mad at these cheesy pork chops. Even when you’re not thrilled to eat pork chops yet again, your eyes will light up when you hear that it’s cheesy pork chops.
Seriously though, the addition of mayonnaise and cheese help keep the pork super moist and tasty. And the onions add a little something extra to break up the richness.
What Cheese to Use
This recipe uses sharp cheddar cheese. It’s our favorite cheese, so we always have it in the house, and it melts well.
But don’t let that stop you from trying different types of cheese. Other favorites I’ve made this with are Parmesan, swiss, provolone, and smoked mozzarella. Each of these adds something a little different to the flavor, and they all are very good.
Experiment with a few different cheeses if you want. It’s a great way to change up the dish in numerous ways.
How to Make Cheese Smothered Pork Chops
This is one of those easy recipes that takes very little time. You likely already have the ingredients on hand, so you don’t have to put much thought or effort into making this.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll pull out this recipe on those days when you just can’t be bothered with dinner. It’s super simple. You can do it with your eyes closed.
Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
Step One
Place the pork chops in an oven safe baking dish. I use a 9×13″ casserole dish. Sprinkle both sides of the chops with salt and pepper.
Step Two
Sprinkle on the onion and spread on the mayo. My husband finds it funny that I always put on the onions first, then the mayo. It’s habit, I guess. You can put on the mayo, then the onion, if you want to.
Sprinkle on the cheese.
Step Three
Bake for 25 minutes. The cheese should be nice and melted by this point.
You may need to cook it longer if you’re using thick pork chops. You can check the internal temperature of the pork chops to make sure it’s reached 145 degrees F.
Carbs in Smothered Pork Chops
The best part about these pork chops for those on a low-carb or keto diet is that they have very little carbs.
There are 2 total carbs in one serving (one pork chop), and just 1 gram net carbs. The carbs come from the onion.
Also keep in mind that a lot of pre-shredded packaged cheeses contain flour to keep the shreds from sticking. If you use pre-shredded cheese, the carb count could be higher.
What Sides Go With Smothered Pork Chops?
The joy of pork chops is that they go with so many different sides. That’s another reason why this is a very low-maintenance dinner.
Try serving your smothered pork chops with steamed tenderstem broccoli, a Strawberry Spinach Salad, or Pan Seared Brussels Sprouts.
